How to Choose English Reading Material

Winter vacation is coming soon. Do you have any plans for reading? We all know that reading English books, magazines and newspapers can help us improve our English, but many students often complain about the reading materials assigned to them by their teachers. The best way to solve the problem is to choose the reading materials by yourselves. Here are some tips to help you make your choice.

Interest drives reading

Whether fiction or nonfiction, always choose the topics that interest you. Interest is the best motivation. Start by picking up those books whose names catch your eye. After that, look through the index of the book to get a general idea about it. You can read the first few pages to see whether the book really attracts you. Only books that really interest you can help you stick to your reading plan.

Resist translations

Many books for students have Chinese translations. Avoid choosing these books as it is quite hard to resist the temptation of reading the Chinese translation, especially when you are eager to know what happens next. Always choose the reading materials that are written in English only.

Limit new words

Many people spend a lot of time looking up new words, so they don’t enjoy reading at all. It can be rather frustrating. Don’t let new words get in the way of your reading. When you choose your reading materials, you can read a few pages to make sure they are not too difficult or too easy for you. Choose reading materials with some new words but not all new words or no new words at all.
When you read, try to guess the meanings of the new words according to the context. So long as you can understand the meanings of the sentences and paragraphs, you don't need to stop and look up the dictionary. You will know the meanings of the new words and remember them after you see them several times. This is the best way for you to enlarge your vocabulary and enjoy reading.

Bigger is not better

Don’t set goals that are too difficult for you to reach. Make your reading plans according to your English level, the time you can spend and other realistic factors. Start with thinner books.

As beginners, you would gain a greater sense of achievement when you finish one book after another than when you finish one thick book after a long time. As you become better in English, you can then read thicker books. Be realistic and patient—Rome was not built in one day.
